A lot of people ask me about motivation. They ask how to motivate themselves to actually do the things they want to do. (run, walk, wake up at 5am) … There is some verse in the bible (which I hesitate to quote because I have never read the thing… but this was in a different book that referenced The Bible)  “We spend more time doing what we do not want to do, than we spend doing what we do want to do.”   – Sounds like this isn’t a new problem!

What do you really want to have the motivation to do

No really… like I want you to think of it and write it down! What do you really want to be motivated to start doing… or to stop doing?

Ok, now I want you to forget about being motivated to do it! I want you to think about how you can become DRIVEN to create the result that action would give to you!!

Let’s say you wrote down wanting to wake up at 5am. That’s a great goal… I had a period of my life where I bolted out of bed at 5am, grabbed a coffee and hit my computer for work and study for 2 hours before my kids woke up! I had this “motivation” because there was a specific result I was after! I wanted to start a coaching business and I was working hard to complete my coach training course work, build a website, and teach myself about marketing and sales! I had to do this before getting my kids off to school and heading to my full time job. See the difference between the action and the result!?

I didn’t want to wake up at 5am nor was I motivated to wake up! I was DRIVEN to create a coaching practice and the only way in hell I was ever going to do that was to get my ass up at 5am

So now back to what you wrote down… what would you like to be motivated to do? And what result will that action produce? Maybe the RESULT is being healthy, reducing stress, not freaking out at your kids, changing careers, being a better spouse or a better boss. Maybe the result is doubling your income or paying off some debt. (or both)

Now on a scale of 1 – 10 how BADLY do you want that result? If you aren’t really sure, ask yourself why you want that result and what it would ultimately cost you if you don’t achieve that result in the next 6 month, year or even 10 years. Now pretend whatever it would “ultimately” cost you… close your eyes and imagine that happening to you tomorrow

We always delay making big changes in our life because the consequences for our actions are so far away! Just think about health. If every time we ate a doughnut we woke up with 25 pounds on our ass we would never do it! But since the consequences are small and go unnoticed over a long period of time we delay making good decisions and changes.

If you truly want to change your habits you have to be driven to change them! Breaking, replacing or reprogramming habits is challenging! When motivation is gone you go right back to your old ways… then say something like “See I knew this wouldn’t work” which is an excuse to drop your diet or new routine and slump back down to a lower level

Ok quick recap!

  1. What do you really want to be motivated to do or to quit doing?
  2. What result are you trying to create by this action?
  3. Why do you want this result?
  4. On a Scale of 1-10 how BADLY Do you want this?
  5. What will it cost you if you don’t create this result?
  6. Imagine that happening to you tomorrow!
  7. Now make a new decision about who and how you are going to be from now on!!

One of my most favourite sayings of all time is…

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now!”

Until Next Time… Keep MAKING PROGRESS!
